Hi Izabely,
Please tell us a little about yourself and what drew you toward the world of geotechnical engineering.
I am a civil engineer, with a postgraduate degree in geotechnics, and I have been working since 2019 in the area of geotechnical monitoring. I became interested in geotechnics for its direct impact on risk management, and I find great value in the work I do, knowing that I contribute to the safety and efficiency of projects.
What or who first inspired you to pursue a career as a Geotechnical Technician/Geotechnical Monitoring Analyst?
What motivates me the most is knowing that my work can save lives, the impact that geotechnical monitoring has on risk prevention, realizing that data analysis can prevent accidents and protect communities, shows me daily the importance of my work.
When you think about your role today, what aspect of the work do you enjoy the most?
What I like most is transforming data into strategic information for decision making. Knowing that a well-done analysis can contribute significantly to operations is the most rewarding part of my job.
Can you share a project or experience that has been especially memorable or meaningful to you so far?
A remarkable moment for me was a volunteer work done in Bento Gonçalves, after heavy rains, when we had to monitor geotechnical risks and, at the same time, deal with the affected community. Seeing the human and environmental impact up close and being able to contribute directly to the protection of people was very gratifying.
In your opinion, what skills or qualities are most crucial for success in this field?
In addition to technical knowledge, I consider attention to detail, clear communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure to be essential. But the main thing is to have a sense of responsibility.
How do you usually approach challenges or problem-solving when things don’t go as planned on-site?
I try to stay calm, analyze the available data and work together with the team to seek quick and effective solutions.
What do you find most rewarding about contributing to geotechnical safety and monitoring?
The most gratifying thing is knowing that my work can save lives.
What advice would you give someone considering becoming a Geotechnical Technician?
I would say that it is a very rewarding profession, but it requires responsibility and dedication. It’s important to never stop learning, to be proactive, and to remember that safety is our highest priority, always.
Outside of work, what’s something about you that could surprise people, perhaps a hobby, talent, or interest?
Outside of work, I like to be in contact with nature, play sports and be close to the people I love.
Thank you, Izabely
