Driving Social Change Through Tech Education: Terampil Digital Program Progress Report

In a world that is becoming increasingly digitised, access to digital education is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. For many in remote and underserved regions of Indonesia, however, opportunities to gain these essential skills remain limited. The Terampil Digital program addresses this need through a transformative initiative made possible by the Orica Impact Fund, in collaboration with HOPE Worldwide Indonesia and GroundProbe.
The Terampil Digital program is more than a community outreach project. Its mission is to close the digital divide and empower individuals, particularly young women, with certified computer training. By doing so, the program not only opens doors to education and employment but also creates a ripple effect of empowerment within families and communities.
A Program Built on Purpose
Launched in early 2025, Terampil Digital is delivering structured, hands-on digital literacy training in three key regions—Balikpapan, Muara Enim, and Sangatta—where such opportunities have historically been limited or unavailable.
The curriculum covers a wide range of practical skills, from basic computer operations and navigating the internet to mastering Microsoft Office and learning about online safety. But the program goes further than technical instruction. It builds confidence, encourages discipline, and fosters a sense of self-reliance that participants carry with them long after the final assessment.
Real Progress, Real People
Each region followed its own tailored timeline to roll out the program:
- In Balikpapan, preparation and registration were completed during the first three weeks of January, followed by the start of in-class training in Week 4. The program has been running continuously from January through to the end of April.
- In Muara Enim and Sangatta, the month of January was dedicated to teacher recruitment, classroom renovations, and student registration. In-class training commenced in Week 2 of February and will continue until mid-May.
Across all three regions, awareness campaigns sparked enthusiastic responses, with hundreds of applications pouring in from aspiring learners. Following a careful screening process, 272 participants were selected for the first cohort:
- Balikpapan: 52 participants selected from 71 applicants
- Sangatta: 120 participants selected from 218 applicants
- Muara Enim: 100 participants selected from 138 applicants
Importantly, the program stayed true to its commitment to gender equity. Of the total participants, 158 were women and 114 were men—highlighting the initiative’s strong focus on providing equal access to education and opportunity.

Nearing the Finish Line
As the first round of training nears completion, participants are preparing for their final assessments. Graduation ceremonies are scheduled for May, marking a significant milestone—not only for the individuals involved but also for the communities they represent.
Meanwhile, program facilitators are actively collecting feedback, tracking learning outcomes, and reviewing lessons learned to further refine and enhance the initiative. These insights will directly shape the structure and content of future training rounds.
Looking Ahead
Preparations for the second intake are now underway. Balikpapan has already begun early registration and interview processes for new participants. In Muara Enim and Sangatta, similar activities will begin toward the end of April.
With the benefit of experience and participant feedback, the curriculum will be fine-tuned to better meet learner needs, while outreach efforts will expand to engage even more remote and underrepresented communities.
The continued collaboration between Orica, GroundProbe, and HOPE Worldwide Indonesia remains central to the program’s success, driven by close engagement with local governments, community leaders, and technology partners to ensure the initiative is relevant, inclusive, and sustainable.
A Digital Future Within Reach
At its heart, the Terampil Digital program is about creating opportunity—one learner at a time. By equipping people with digital skills, we are not only helping them navigate the modern world but also giving them the tools to shape it.
Thanks to the continued support of the Orica Impact Fund, initiatives like Terampil Digital are driving long-term, measurable change—enriching lives, strengthening communities, and building a more inclusive digital future for all.
